Open the fuel flap. Compatible vehicles carry an “E20” label inside the fuel-lid enclosure. If it's there, you're clear.
Read the owner's manual. The fuel page states the maximum ethanol blend your engine is approved for (E10 or E20).

What is E20 petrol?
E20 is petrol blended with 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. India is rolling it out nationwide under the Ethanol Blending Programme to cut crude-oil imports, support farmers, and lower emissions.
Is my car E20 compatible?
Cars built from April 2023 (BS6 Phase 2) are E20 material-compliant. Cars from April 2020 to March 2023 were generally made for E10 — verify first. Cars before April 2020 are not E20-rated. Check yours with the tool above.
Are bikes and scooters E20 compatible?
Yes for newer ones: two-wheelers manufactured from April 2023 under BS6 Phase 2 are E20 material-compliant. Older bikes were largely designed for E10 and should be checked before running E20 regularly.
Will E20 reduce my mileage?
Ethanol carries slightly less energy than petrol, so a small 1–3% dip in mileage is normal on E20. In a compatible vehicle that's expected, not a fault.
Can I use E20 in an old car or bike?
Vehicles built before April 2020 weren't designed for a 20% ethanol blend, which can affect older rubber and fuel-system parts over time. Where possible use E10 or regular petrol, and keep up with servicing.
Is E20 available at every petrol pump?
E20 is being rolled out nationwide and is already at a large and growing number of pumps. Availability still varies by area, and regular petrol / E10 remain widely sold.
Does E20 damage the engine?
In a vehicle built for E20, no — it runs safely with only a small mileage change. The concern is older vehicles not designed for 20% ethanol, where seals and fuel-system parts can wear faster over time.
What if I put E20 in a non-compatible car by mistake?
A one-off tankful is unlikely to cause immediate harm — the real concern is regular, long-term use in an older vehicle. Switch back to E10 or regular petrol where you can, and keep up with servicing.
What's the difference between E10, E20 and E85?
The number is the ethanol share: E10 is 10%, E20 is 20%, and E85 is up to 85% (for flex-fuel vehicles). India's petrol has moved from E10 toward E20.
Does E20 void my car insurance?
No. The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has clarified that using E20 fuel has no effect on the validity of your vehicle insurance in India — the claim otherwise came from a misread screenshot.
